AMNESTY’S ANNUAL REPORT BRINGS THE GOOD AND BAD NEWS ON EXECUTIONS IN 2020

Amnesty International’s annual report shows that China (whose number of executions is unknown), Iran, Egypt, Iraq and Saudi Arabia were the five countries who carried out most executions in 2020: https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2021/4/21/executions-death-penalties-continued-in-2020-amid-covid-report.

The United States executed 17 people with former President Trump’s reintroduction of federal executions contributing to that number, albeit, that US numbers were at historically low levels.

Saudi numbers of executions are reduced by 85% from 2019.

The Egyptian government executed more people in 2020 than any other year since 2013, the year when the democratically elected government of President Morsi was overthrown.
