Oregon, USA: Governor to dismantle execution chamber and commute existing death penalty sentences

The state of Oregon is taking significant steps to effectively end the death penalty. As of 21 December 2022, the 17 people on death row in Oregon will have their sentences commuted to life in prison without the possibility of parole, and the execution chamber will also soon be removed.

Whilst the death penalty cannot formally be abolished without a public vote, these are substantial steps in moving towards the end of the death penalty in Oregon.
